While there's nothing controversial in the presentation of this CBS report on the second edition of the Robot Games, most of us would agree that the subject matter raises many uncomfortable or challenging issues. The World Humanoid Robot Games took place in Beijing, China, this month in a stadium repurposed from the 2022 Winter Olympics. Many of the machines on display can now outrun and out-jump even the best real-life Olympians. What does this mean for us as humans, for our urge to strive towards something at the very outer edges of our capacity? For tech aficionados, there's no concern or ethical crossroads involved. The domestic audience also seems won over, laughing heartily at some of the mishaps but perceiving this as a fantastic promotion for China's standing on the world stage. The Asian nation has long been ahead in the humanoid robot space and these Games demonstrate both their likeness and unlikeness to the humans watching. Tennis matches were another sport causing oohs and aahs at the event. Are we seeing the beginning of war as entertainment, and is that an outcome we should be aiming for? One of the engineers at the Games says that he envisages robot soldiers as being delivered just five or ten years down the line.
