Three-minute warm-up footage to let us know that political action thriller 'V for Vendetta' is back in cinemas on November 5, 2026: it's being re-released to celebrate its 20th anniversary. As described by the IMDb, the movie is set in "a future British dystopian society", where "a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of V, plots to overthrow the tyrannical government". Whether or not you remember the original release of the film - starring Hugo Weaving, Nathalie Portman, and a really good mask - plenty are ready for a revolution, and plenty would argue that Britain's slide into a fascistic state has been well underway for the past several years. Again, for those not familiar, the November 5 re-release date is signficant, is it marks the date of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, when revolutionary Guy Fawkes and fellow Catholic conspirators attempted to blow up Parliament and assassinate James I of England. As explained by Historic Royal Palaces: "No one in the group knew much about gunpowder, apart from Fawkes, an explosives expert from his military days. Naturally, he was chosen to set the fuse in the cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament". Most of the plotters were wealthy men, driven by their hope of religious freedom. The attempt lives on today in the form of 'Bonfire Night', with political effigies being burned on bonfires across the country each year as people gather to cheer and enjoy the spectacle of accompanying firework displays.
