Real reel: NYC Mayor Mamdani undercuts AI

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been active in delivering a range of messages straight to camera since he took office in November 2025. His surprise victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa made him the city's first Muslim mayor, its first mayor born in Africa, and, at 34, its youngest since 1892 - which partly accounts for his eagerness to reach people on the move through ubiquitous digital devices. However, his ease in front of the camera belies the usual glitches even the most experienced broadcaster comes up against, and Mamdani's now released a 'blooper reel' to demonstrate that practice makes perfect. As reported by The Independent, when he set out to promote free Broadway tickets for the city’s high-school students, speaking directly to them in Bengali, Mandarin, and Spanish, his polished delivery sparked accusations of use of AI. In response, NYC's mayor decided to release this behind-the-scenes reel illustrating his attempts to get each language right for the final product.
