Activists accuse Thiel of seeking to profit from the country’s natural resources and wielding excessive political influence in the South American nation. Peter O'Brien reports". As reported by propertyinbuenosaires.com, the PayPal co-founder paid approximately $12 million for the mansion in the capital in what is one of the most expensive residential sales in Buenos Aires history. "The property spans roughly 1,600 m², designed by Alejandro Bustillo, the architect behind the Llao Llao Hotel in Bariloche and the Casino in Mar del Plata. Six en-suite bedrooms. A marble staircase. A French Academic facade. The kind of house that, in most global capitals, would trade for eight figures easily. It did here too, just with a different first digit". The publication goes on to put this in the context of global property prices: "Thiel’s $12 million bought roughly 1,600 m² of Bustillo-designed architecture in the city’s most exclusive residential pocket. That works out to about $7,500/m². For context: comparable trophy properties in Manhattan trade above $60,000/m². In London’s Mayfair, $40,000–$50,000/m²".
