UK residents and visitors will be familiar with the sight of street vendors of The Big Issue, the magazine that was set up in 1991 in response to London's growing number of homeless people. It enabled the homeless and vulnerably circumstanced to earn a living through selling magazines. Now it's partnered with upstart digital bank Monzo in a 'Pay It Forward' scheme that means buyers of the magazine can pass their copy on to a friend who scans its QR code, paying for it a second time. The money goes straight into the original vendor's Monzo bank account, enabling him/her to access the kind of financial services they're often excluded from. It tackles the issue of an increasingly cashless society, and is also more environmentally friendly. What do you think of the scheme? Celebs like former footballer Gary Lineker and rock star Roger Daltrey (pictured with vendor Aaron Dunn) are supporting it. Recent data showing that 4,677 people bedded down on the streets or in sheds and tents in 2018 in the UK - figure 165% higher than in 2010.
